Hand therapists use neuromuscular re-education to help restore natural body movement patterns.

Your body’s nerves and muscles work together to create movement. Over time, muscle movement patterns are learned and remembered. Nerves send information to your muscles and brain on where, when, and how quickly to travel.

When nerves or muscles are damaged or wounded as a result of trauma or other medical or neurological disorders, muscular activity patterns might be harmed. Neuromuscular re-education is one method used by hand therapists to help persons with neuromuscular deficits restore normal movement.

At Cascade Hand & Orthopedic Rehab, we treat the patient as a whole, addressing all facets of the dysfunction to help the patient reach their full recovery potential and be the best they can be in all of their functional activities. Give our occupational therapy clinic in Fort Myers, FL a call today to set up an appointment and find out if neuromuscular re-education can benefit you.

Neuromuscular re-education consists of:

  • Manual techniques (i.e., PNF-proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation)
  • Activities for balance and core control
  • Therapeutic exercises that are designed to re-develop normal controlled movement patterns.

To treat many of the symptoms that a patient presents with during their recovery phase, it is critical to re-establish natural kinesthetic sense and proprioception of the Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, and Appendicular bones.

When these neurological qualities aren’t functioning properly, a patient’s posture is harmed, and many of the muscles in the affected area are malfunctioning. Pain, inflammation, and edema induced by surgery or injury can result in a loss of neuromuscular control and erratic movement.

Many of our patients complain of general tenderness and restricted joint motion (s). To be completely functional, a joint must have maximum range of motion. If the joint has a wide range of motion, it can develop weakness and functional weaknesses over time. If the symptoms are not treated correctly, this time period varies from patient to patient, but it usually lasts several weeks to months.

To remove the patient’s symptoms and fix the underlying issue, any lack of motion and strength must be treated. However, before developing enough strength and motion to restore full function, the nervous system must be re-educated. Without the neuromuscular re-education process, “normal” movement patterns are unlikely to be re-established.

Neuromuscular re-education is an essential part of our patient’s recovery. Using the right procedures, activities, and exercises on an injured body part will help prevent a chronic condition from developing!
